The Fallen

The Fallen

This piece combines two drastically diverse elements. Those being the wonders of nature, and that of Human tragedy. Like all Canadians, I was shocked and Saddened by the senseless killing of four young RCMP officers in Mayerthorpe, Alberta in March 3rd of 2005. The spectacle of the red, swirling leaves that greeted Me while driving through Algonquin Parkin early October, reminded me of a whimsical musical ride by a multitude of unseen Mounties. If you look closely, you will see four slashes of red serge colour in my piece which proudly represents The Fallen.  Anthony Gordon, Lionide Johnston, Brock Myrol, and Peter Schiemann’s sacrifice will never be Forgotten.

    Isolation

Resist the temptation and directives to place nation and self before others. Search out the glowing light in others, and lift it up for all to see.  The land takes its rest from sunbaked skies, and blankets itself in quilts of white and crystal shimmer.  Be open to others and embrace the changes they also bring to our lives. We are of one family on this planet, and will only dance with the joy of acceptance when we resist the move towards isolation.

    Temagami Mist

Awaken before the rise of the sun. Listen through the ascending shroud for the call of the loon and the splash of the otter. Breathe in the early morn as paddle strokes caress placid waters, and absorb all that is offered in the Temagami mist.

    Lac du Cerf

Your clear waters calm my soul with every stroke of my paddle. My red canoe is drawn to islands where solitude and reflection have sustained me through formative years. A father’s love of nature flows through my veins like warm Summer breezes, and lessons learned are appreciated with every sunset’s glow.  You are the catalyst that reunites long lost friends. You are Lac-du-Cerf.

    Thomson

Paddle strokes heard through the morning mist foreshadow an artist in search of inspiration. Algonquin presents its gifts to all who are willing to receive. Some see landscapes in vibrant colours and bold brushstrokes, while others pass without thought. Be a painter with your presence. Protect the forest, and guide others to respect its treasures. Move slowly, and absorb the vistas before you. Take pause from devices that distract, and discover your inner Thomson.
